Are The Gideons related to the Judge Gideon?

Yes.

The organization, The Gideons International,  takes its name from the Biblical figure Gideon, depicted in Judges 6. They are traditional christians and believe and teach the basics of orthodox Christian doctrine. The New Testaments they distribute have two pages in the back devoted to explaining the gospel and how to be saved.

They are  an evangelical Christian organization  began distributing free Bibles, the endeavor for which they are chiefly known, in 1908, when the first Bibles were placed in the rooms of the Superior Hotel in Superior, Montana.

They represent local churches as missionaries  and their sole purpose is winning the lost by  providing them directly the Word of God. The believe that by doing so, lets people read and see for themselves what the Bible is about and that God will use His Word to increase His kingdom (1 Corinthians 3:7).

3 Because you still live as the people of this world live. When there is jealousy among you and you quarrel with one another, doesn’t this prove that you belong to this world, living by its standards?

4 When one of you says, “I follow Paul,” and another, “I follow Apollos” – aren’t you acting like worldly people? 5 After all, who is Apollos? And who is Paul? We are simply God’s servants, by whom you were led to believe. Each one of us does the work which the Lord gave him to do: 6 I planted the seed, Apollos watered the plant, but it was God who made the plant grow.

7 The one who plants and the one who waters really do not matter. It is God who matters, because he makes the plant grow (Good News Bible)

All donations to the Gideons go for the printing and transportation of Bibles—many to countries where traditional missionaries cannot go. In forty-eight of the countries where the Gideons are organized, people struggle to survive; they will never own a Bible without some assistance.
